2020 Victorian Local Government Election Results and Analysis

At the close of nominations for the 2020 Local Government elections there were 2,187 candidates, an increase of 52 candidates from the 2016 elections.

76 of Victoria’s 79 Councils went to election in October 2020, South Gippsland Shire and the Cities of Casey and Whittlesea remained governed by Administrators having been dismissed.

  • 183 incumbent councillors chose not to re-contest

  • 17 Mayors chose not to re-contest whilst another 7 were defeated

  • 431 incumbent councillors contested with 314 being re-elected and 308 newly elected councillors
