Victorian Local Government Countbacks and By-elections since 2016

As we come to the end of the third year and enter the fourth year of the Victorian Municipal electoral cycle, we reflect upon the former Councillors who were elected in October 2016, but for one reason or another were unable to complete a full four-year term in office.

In 2016, 78 of Victoria’s 79 Councils went to election (Geelong’s then Administrators were appointed until 2017). There were 2,135 candidates seeking election to the 637 Councillor positions, of which 323 incumbent Councillors were returned.

Since the October 2016 elections there have been (to date) at total of 42 electoral vacancies, 34 countbacks and 8 by-elections.
